DESCA

DIRECTOR | EDITOR | DOP

Desca was exhibited in 2020 at the Royal Academy of Arts. It was one of less than 100 pieces shown that summer of 33,000 submissions. I wrote a statement at the time about the film:

" 'Desca' is an experimental work using footage of my friends and family over the last three/four years which I have recorded with no purpose and now remixed and re-contextualised to new effect. There is deliberate over saturation, and an excess of editing techniques as I wanted to push the boundaries of the manipulation of footage and sound, while also satirising the rise of distortion editing due to things such as meme culture and modern music videos.

In part, I was inspired by artists who use debris or thrown away items to create art and I wanted to translate that idea with unused video, leading it to exist somewhat as a time capsule of forgotten moments. I have also designed it so it can be watched from any point, there is no intentional start or finish, the intention being the experience is different every time depending on where you start."
